Hounds return to the field to start season

It's football time again in Atascadero. The Greyhounds began two-a-days on Monday after a summer spent lifting, conditioning and participating in passing leagues and lineman competitions.
“Everybody’s pretty uptempo,? said Steven Manier, a senior quarterback on the team. “They’re working really hard. We’re on the same page for the most part.?
“Good numbers again,? said coach Vic Cooper, entering his fourth year in charge of the team. “We should have some decent depth. Everything went fairly smooth for a first day. You can’t ask for much more. It’s hard to have too much intensity without any pads on, but I would say [the intensity] was pretty good.?
The Hounds spent the day getting the basic foundation in place, inserting a single running play and five or so passing plays which were the same plays from the passing leagues during the summer.
“We go slowly but surely these first few days,? Cooper said. “We do less contact stuff because of no pads, and then come Thursday, we start pads and that’s when things get physical. We start working on technique and it gets more grueling.?
Monday was the first day the team was allowed to practice together as a full team, per CIF-Southern Section rules. But the Hounds were still able to get work in over the summer.
“We went to passing leagues and we were pretty competitive in those,? Manier said.
The Hounds went to passing league competitions at Coast Union High School, San Luis Obispo, Westlake High School in the Conejo Valley and at Arroyo Grande High School. Additionally, Atascadero took part in three lineman competitions.
“We did come in second place at the Arroyo Grande lineman competition, which we’ve never done before,? said Cooper, himself a former lineman for the Hounds in the 1980s.
Monday’s practices started the three-week process of getting ready for the season opener, a Friday, Aug. 31 home game against Washington Union. The Hounds beat the Panthers 18-14 in Easton to start last season.
